The American West has this way of making everything feel bigger and more alive. Longer drives, wider skies, and landscapes that just stop you in your tracks. If you’re craving that mix of jaw-dropping nature, open roads, and a few iconic stops that make the whole trip feel unforgettable, this list is for you.
I focused mostly on those epic natural spots that keep calling me back, with a few city and drive highlights mixed in.
Here are 20 places I think you’ll actually want to experience:
I put together all 20 bucket list ideas into one beautiful image below. Save it as your summer mission board.
1. Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)
The sheer scale hits different in person. Stand at the edge and watch the layers of rock stretch out for miles — especially magical at sunrise or sunset.
2. Yosemite National Park
Granite cliffs like Half Dome and El Capitan, waterfalls pouring down, and peaceful valleys. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to lace up your hiking boots right away.
3. Yellowstone National Park
Geysers, colorful hot springs, and wildlife everywhere. Seeing Old Faithful go off or spotting bison roaming around feels pretty special.
4. Zion National Park
Those massive red sandstone walls and narrow slot canyons. Hiking The Narrows (right through the river) is one of those things you’ll talk about for years.
5. Bryce Canyon National Park
Thousands of those bright orange hoodoo rock formations. The way the light hits them at dawn is honestly unreal.
6. Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe Bend
The smooth, glowing curves inside the slot canyon and that perfect horseshoe overlook of the river. Pure photography gold.
7. Monument Valley
Classic Wild West vibes with those giant sandstone buttes rising out of the desert. It feels like stepping into an old movie.
8. Golden Gate Bridge & San Francisco
Walking or biking across the bridge (even in the fog) and popping over to Alcatraz gives you that perfect mix of city energy and views.
9. Pacific Coast Highway (Big Sur stretch)
Cliffside roads with the ocean right there beside you. Stopping at Bixby Bridge for photos is a must.
10. Las Vegas Strip
Neon lights, fountain shows, and non-stop buzz. A fun contrast after all the quiet nature spots.
11. Death Valley National Park
Extreme desert beauty, including the lowest point in North America at Badwater Basin. It’s otherworldly in the best way.
12. Sequoia National Park
Standing next to trees that are thousands of years old and taller than most buildings is humbling and kind of magical.
13. Arches National Park
All those natural stone arches against the red rock. Watching the sun set at Delicate Arch is a highlight for so many people.
14. Grand Teton National Park
Sharp mountain peaks and crystal-clear lakes. It pairs perfectly with Yellowstone and feels a bit more peaceful.
15. Lake Tahoe
That incredible blue-green water surrounded by mountains. Great for swimming in summer or just soaking in the scenery.
16. Crater Lake National Park
The deepest, bluest lake you’ll probably ever see, sitting inside an old volcano. The color is almost too perfect.
17. Seattle & Mount Rainier
City vibes with Pike Place Market and the Space Needle, plus that massive volcano looming nearby. Best of both worlds.
18. Hollywood & Santa Monica Pier
The Walk of Fame energy plus the classic pier with ocean views and that Ferris wheel. Pure California fun.
19. Redwood National and State Parks
Walking through those misty ancient redwood forests feels peaceful and a little timeless.
20. Glacier National Park (Going-to-the-Sun Road)
Dramatic mountains, glaciers, and one of the most beautiful drives in the country. It really feels like the wild frontier.
The West doesn’t need to be rushed or perfectly planned. Pick a few that speak to you, grab some good snacks for the road, and just go see them. The best memories usually sneak up on you along the way anyway.
Which one are you most excited to add to your list? Tell me in the comments — I’d love to hear what’s calling your name this year!
